St Albans has the oldest and most awkward building stock we work in. The Cathedral Quarter, Fishpool Street, Holywell Hill and George Street hold timber-framed, Georgian and Victorian property with cellars, suspended floors, unlined roof voids and shared party walls. Rodents in those buildings travel through voids and behind panelling, and the fix is survey and sealing rather than bait alone.

The hospitality trade concentrates that work. The city has an unusually high number of pubs, restaurants and cafés, many in old buildings with cellars and shared rear refuse yards down narrow alleys. Those premises need scheduled programmes, site plans and recorded findings suitable for an environmental health inspection, plus visits timed around service.

Outside the centre it changes again. Marshalswick, Fleetville, Jersey Farm and New Greens are post-war housing with shared voids and garage courts; Verulamium Park, the Ver and the Alban Way put rat harbourage against gardens across AL1 and AL3; and Bricket Wood, Chiswell Green, Sandridge, Colney Heath and Park Street are farmland- and woodland-fringe proofing jobs.
